Five imprisoned. Eight fined.
2,719 Bibles. 10,600 marks.
The CNSAS study, from the Securitate reports.
My father is one of the five. The names of the eight stay in the study.
Three lists, plus one stop at the border. I add a sum only inside one list. The study does not put them into one total.
| What the paper says | Count |
|---|---|
| Imprisoned. The study writes: Paul Gross, Matei Fakner, Gheorghe Hoffman, Mihail Kloos, Manfred Herbert. The family writes my father as Hofman. | 5 |
| Eight other people, fined. The names stay in the study. | 8 |
| Imprisoned and fined, in this trial | 13 |
Amnesty and Keston write about the same five. I do not count them again. The German citizen stopped at Stamora-Moravița is not one of the 13. The study does not give his name.
The Militia checkpoint at Suceava. Two cars with Alba plates.
| What the paper says | Count |
|---|---|
| Russian Bibles | 576 |
| Booklets | 167 |
| Printed pieces, these two rows | 743 |
| Tape cassettes | 40 |
| Sacks | 7 |
The note cited by the study. It speaks of houses. The checkpoint above speaks of cars.
| What the paper says | Count |
|---|---|
| Bibles | 2,719 |
| Brochures and magazines | 2,135 |
| Illustrated cards | 555 |
| Loose sheets | 874 |
| Leaflets | 1,605 |
| Printed pieces, these five rows. Of these, 2,719 are Bibles. | 7,888 |
| Foreign radio-cassette players | 5 |
| Foreign radios | 5 |
| Foreign tape players | 7 |
| Tape cassettes | 135 |
| Knitting machine | 1 |
| Electric cookers | 12 |
| Washing machine | 1 |
| Freezers of 160 liters, made abroad | 2 |
| Fake wedding rings | 5 |
| Roll films | 2 |
| Dacia 1300 cars, each with a cassette player. I do not add them to the 7. | 4 |
| Diesel | 510 liters |
| Made trousers. The note calls them stolen from the Rădăuți cooperative. | 35 |
If the 576 Bibles from the cars are not already inside the 2,719, the reading would be 3,295. The study does not add them. I do not put 3,295 in the title. I do not add the 167 booklets on top of the 2,135, nor the 40 cassettes on top of the 135.
The same name, Canalul-80. Another day, another stop. A German citizen.
| What the paper says | Count |
|---|---|
| Religious brochures | 2,355 |
| Cassettes | 20 |
| Pictures of Jesus | 200 |
| Flyers | no number |
I do not add the 2,355 brochures into the 2,135.
I do not add one currency to another.
The mark was the money of West Germany. The 10,600 marks are 5,419.69 euro, at the 1999 rate: 1 euro = 1.95583 marks. The Swiss franc was Switzerland’s money, the dollar America’s, the zloty Poland’s, the ruble the Soviet Union’s. The lei in the row below are the lei of that time.
| What the paper says | Count |
|---|---|
| West German marks, from the five, in the study | 10,600 |
| Swiss francs, in the study | 650 |
| U.S. dollars, in the study | 101 |
| Zlotys, in the study | 2,060 |
| Rubles, August 1978, my father’s working transcription. They are not inside the 10,600. The study does not put the currency charge on his name. | 170 |
| Lei. The same sum: the value of the 170 rubles, owed jointly with Kloos. Not a second pile of cash. | 2,822 |
The same papers, set here so the machines and the tapes can be seen. This is not a second haul. I do not add one list on top of another.
| Where | What | Count |
|---|---|---|
| The cars, 18/19 October | Tape cassettes | 40 |
| 21 houses, by 31 October | Foreign radio-cassette players | 5 |
| 21 houses | Foreign radios | 5 |
| 21 houses | Foreign tape players | 7 |
| 21 houses | Tape cassettes | 135 |
| 21 houses | A tape player in each Dacia 1300. I do not add them to the 7. | 4 |
| Stamora-Moravița, 10 August | Cassettes | 20 |
| The barn at Jalcău, 30 October | A Philips tape player and cassettes. They may already sit inside the 135. | 1 and 12 |
| My father’s receipt, 17 November | Tape player I.T.T. 6331-24-05, defective, and 25 tapes. After the note of 31 October. I do not add them to the 135. | 1 and 25 |
| The same receipt | Metal clips | 5 |
| The same receipt | Used films. I do not add them to the 2 roll films in the house note. | 2 |
| Dorel’s statement | The same I.T.T. player, bought from Kloos for 1,000 lei, and about 45 cassettes at home. One held a sermon by Iosif Țon. This is not the figure on the receipt. I do not add them to the 25 or to the 135. | about 45 |
| Margareta’s statement | One tape player that was given to her. No brand. I do not count it again. | 1 |
| Her statement | Some of the recorded cassettes, at her brother in Grănicești. No inventory. | no number |
| The coach papers | Cassettes with Iosif Țon’s voice. A different line from the cassette at home. I do not add them to the 40 or to the 135. | no number |
Canalul-81 is another case. I do not put it here. There is no single total of everyone. The title stays what the study reports for the trial: five imprisoned, eight fined, 2,719 Bibles in the houses, 10,600 marks.
The Securitate kept the files. CNSAS holds them. It opened two lists because the law checks a person in public office. The search is live, on their site, now.
A collaborator is a person checked for a public office and found to have collaborated. An officer is an officer or a non-commissioned officer of the Securitate. These are not everyone in the files. A name that is missing is not a certificate.
Fosta SecuritateList of officers
From the page Fosta Securitate you open the list of collaborators. The officers have their own page. You type the name there, at CNSAS. The box below searches only the pages of this archive. I opened the pages of my father, Gheorghe Hofman, so a student can read them. The family file stays private. How the search works. Seven false names from the notes about him, and how to read a note, are at how the Securitate worked.
This site keeps the story of my father, Gheorghe Hofman, of my mother, Margareta Hofman, and of the Canalul-80 case of 1980.
It is a place for my sons, Danny and Johnny, for my two brothers, Dorel and Cornel, and for my four sisters, Dorina, Valerica, Mihaela, and Daniela, for any student, and for anyone who wants to understand what it cost to carry Bibles when it was forbidden.
This is my hope: when I am no longer here, my sons, my two brothers, my four sisters, and any student will carry the research on. The files should keep being opened, with patience, and with the page in hand.
The complete family archive stays private. Anyone who studies it under proper conditions writes to daniel@hofmanfund.org.
The short story, to hand to someone who asks: my father’s story.
A living archive. The map changes when a page arrives. A place marked as still being checked is not yet a verified stop. Have a page? Send it. It is read before it goes on the map.

His panel, with the map and the chapters. The words are his.
Keston College · 1982
The 1981 ALRC report, reprinted in Religion in Communist Lands. Our summary, with their credit. “A trial in Botoșani” is their sentence.
Checked
The panel names Gheorghe Hofman of Rădăuți in Canalul-80. The trial title says 10 January 1981. The working transcription joins two terms into one year and six months for the sentence of that day. The certified copy is not in the house. The opening line says 1980. Part 7. On his map, Stânca Costești is the border site.
Credit. Dorin Dobrincu, in Omul evanghelic. O explorare a comunităților protestante românești, coordinated with Dănuț Mănăstireanu, Polirom, Iași, 2018, p. 177, writes the name “Gheorghe Hoffman” among the five arrested in Canalul-80. On p. 178 the book assigns four years, and the pardon of 22 August 1981, to Paul Gross. For Hofman, the working transcription joins two terms into one year and six months. The certified copy is not in the house. The printed sources set the sentences side by side. The passage cites Elis Neagoe-Pleșa and Liviu Pleșa, “Cultele neoprotestante din România în perioada 1975–1989,” in Adrian Nicolae Petcu (ed.), Partidul, Securitatea și cultele, 1945–1989, Editura Nemira, București, 2005, pp. 379–381.
Amnesty · Keston · CNSAS · 1981–1982
My father, in four printed records. The length of the sentence stays open until the certified copy. Canalul-80, the Danube–Black Sea canal, EVANGHELISTUL, and BIBLIA are different names, set out on this page, with the cover names of informers and the official CNSAS page where they are searched.
For my brothers and sisters
The letter and the dates are on their own page.
Hofman Fund is not a company. It is an open file: pages photographed at CNSAS, working transcriptions, kept current. A student or a researcher puts a hand on the page — the date, the age, the signature — not only on the story told 45 years later.
The family files are not on this page. Names of the living are not placed here without their word.
Night of 18/19 October 1980, Suceava checkpoint: two cars with Alba plates, sacks of Russian Bibles from Karlsruhe. That opened Canalul-80. Gheorghe Hofman, a mechanic from Rădăuți, was taken on 31 October. In October 1980 he was 44. He was born on 22 March 1936. Margareta Hofman, his wife, was 41. She was born on 1 June 1939. The working transcription joins two terms into one year and six months. The prison was at Botoșani. The certified copy is not in the house: the printed sources. The state wrote illegal holding of foreign currency, 170 rubles in August 1978, and printed matter without authorization, not “Bible smuggling.” What is on paper, what someone stated, what others printed, and what still needs research stands separated, with each credit, on the sources. The maps hold the places and the calendar. In 1982 Keston College reprinted an ALRC report: the five, with the term the report wrote. The summary.
On 30 October 1980 — the day before detention — the Militia took statements in the house. Declarations of the living do not sit on this page.
Photographs from the reading room are working copies. The certified copy is at CNSAS, request P 2551/2026. The family files are not on this page.
A Militia-journal statement is not a recruited informer (cover name, reports, a source stamp). Five people were tried. The family files are not on this door.
The source is the photograph of the page. The transcription is working text. Uncertain words sit in [brackets]. The Militia does the search and the declaration; the Securitate keeps the DUI and the telegrams.
The parents and the grandmother may be published. The living need their word. Do not close the file with a verdict. The right answer is: here is the page, here is the date, here is what we do not yet know.
Write to Daniel Hofman: daniel@hofmanfund.org. Class, paper, permissions. The classroom packet (90 min) sits apart: For faculty. The certified copy is requested at CNSAS, P 2551/2026.
A file for the archive is uploaded here: hofmanfund.org/trimite/. A zip, a PDF, a Word file, or any other file. Nothing is published before it is checked.
