The Rădăuți searches

A map of the houses my father and the family went through. Only the places for which we have the page are here. Each point leads to the real file.

By 31 October the file counts 21 searches. Three places in Rădăuți have a page at home. The rest are still being checked. The hours sit beside each house, and below, in the order of the days. The map below is Google Maps, set on Rădăuți, in Romania. The buttons move the same map: the country, the town, then each house.

Our house is named. The others are listed as grandparents, an uncle and an aunt. The town and the street stay. Their names can come later.

Sorry. The page from the file is for the family only. A click shows the door and the password. With the name and the password, the door opens on the page that was asked for.

3 Sitarilor is the house where we grew up. The search record of 30 October writes this number. The statement writes 3 Gărilor. It is the same house. Today’s map has a Gării Street by the station. The house is not there. The 1981 file writes 4 Sitarilor. The pin stays on number 3. Open in Google Maps

3 Sitarilor · the house where we grew up

30 October 1980. The house of Hofman Gheorghe and Hofman Margareta. The search record of the same day writes 3 Sitarilor Street. Her statement writes 3 Gărilor Street. It is the same house. Another page writes 4 Sitarilor Street. The pin stays on number 3. Sheets 40 and 41 write that the search began at 13:20 and ended at 15:30. That is two hours and ten minutes. It is a reading of the photograph, not the certified copy.

25 Jalcău · the grandparents

30 October 1980, Rădăuți. The grandparents’ house. The consent: 3 rooms, a summer kitchen, a loft, a barn, a yard. In the barn, four sacks. The house record writes from 11:00 to 14:30. That is three hours and thirty minutes. The barn report, on the uncle’s page, writes from 15:00 to 17:30. That is two hours and thirty minutes. They are two acts, at the same house. Each keeps its own hours. The barn is not drawn as a separate second search. Another sheet writes a different address. We do not attach it to this house.

2 Liliacului · the aunt

30 October 1980, Rădăuți. We have the aunt’s consent to the search and her statement of the same day. These pages carry neither a start time nor an end time. The search record with the hours is still missing. It is not the Sitarilor house and it is not Jalcău.

How long it lasted, and in what order

  1. 18 to 19 October 1980, at night. The Suceava checkpoint. Two cars, seven sacks. Father is not taken that night. It is not a house search.
  2. 25 October 1980. The order of 26 October writes that the criminal investigation began on this day.
  3. 26 October 1980, 15:00. A five-day warrant, at the Suceava militia jail, until 31 October, 15:00. On the photograph, the line where the accused signs that he received the warrant is blank.
  4. 28 October 1980, around 15:00. The son’s statement, written on 30 October, says the house was already talking of a search and of a summons for questioning in Suceava. We do not have a second search record, with an earlier date, for this house.
  5. 30 October 1980. The five-day warrant is still running. At 25 Jalcău, the grandparents’ house, from 11:00 to 14:30: three hours and thirty minutes. At 3 Sitarilor, from 13:20 to 15:30: two hours and ten minutes. At the same Jalcău house, the barn, from 15:00 to 17:30: two hours and thirty minutes. The Sitarilor hours and the Jalcău hours overlap on the clock, between 13:20 and 14:30. The pages do not say it was the same team. At 2 Liliacului, the same day, the hours are not on the pages at home.
  6. 31 October 1980, 15:00. The five-day warrant ends. The long holding begins on this day. The extension is not on the photographs of the 26 October warrant.
  7. By this day the file counts 21 searches. The hours above are for the houses that have a page. For the rest, the page with the hours is still missing.

The rest of the 21 · still being checked

We do not draw streets we do not have. Sibiu is not a point on this map: the form says consent was given that the search not be carried out. Cîlnic, Sebeș and Miercurea belong to the network, not to the Rădăuți houses above. Anyone who has a page can send it. It is read before it goes on the map.
